A direct Shopify store offers control over brand, customer experience and retention. Marketplaces offer existing demand, trust and reach. Choosing one and ignoring the other can limit growth; joining every channel without a plan can create complexity and erode margin.
The practical question is what role each channel should play for your products, customers and operating model.
What Shopify is best at
A direct store gives the brand control over merchandising, bundles, education, first-party customer relationships and lifecycle marketing. It is particularly valuable when the purchase needs explanation, the range supports cross-sell or repeat purchasing matters.
That control comes with responsibility. The brand must create demand, maintain the website, measure acquisition accurately and continuously improve conversion.
What marketplaces are best at
Amazon and other marketplaces place products in front of shoppers who are already searching. Their trust, fulfilment options and established buying journeys can shorten the path to purchase and open new markets.
The trade-off is less customer ownership, channel fees, direct price comparison and platform-specific rules. A marketplace should be judged on contribution and strategic reach, not revenue alone.
Assign a role to every channel
One channel may introduce the brand, another may convert urgent demand, and the direct store may be the best place for bundles or a broader range. Define the role before setting targets so channels are not rewarded for competing over the same customer.
- Demand capture
- Brand discovery
- International reach
- Range extension and bundles
- Retention and repeat purchase
Coordinate pricing, promotions and stock
Uncoordinated discounting damages trust and creates channel conflict. Separate stock pools can hide risk until a product oversells or a key channel runs out. Use shared commercial calendars, clear pricing rules and an inventory view that reflects lead times and channel priorities.
Measure the mix at business level
Compare contribution after channel fees, advertising, fulfilment and returns. Also consider what the channel contributes beyond the immediate order: access to a market, new customer acquisition, repeat purchase or useful demand data.
The right mix is not fixed. Review it as products, margins, customer behaviour and marketplace conditions change.
